It’s not uncommon to come across a horse or two when recreating on SNRA trails.
People often don’t realize that horses can spook easily. A biker coming at them or a hiker walking at a fast pace can make for a scary situation. A horse can be difficult to control once agitated creating a dangerous situation for everyone. For those unfamiliar with these amazing animals here are some tips to keep in mind.
- Remember- when hiking in Idaho forests, bikers yield to hikers and horses. Hikers yield to horses. We ALL yield to horses!
- Stop or move slowly to the side of the trail.
- If you are on your bike, you may need to get off.
- Say hello- engage in conversation with the rider. This calms the horse to see you as a human and not a predator.
- Ask the rider how they would like you to proceed. They know their horse and what works best for their animal.
- Avoid approaching the horse from behind.

Do anything that would startle the horse
Don’t wear earbuds- you need to hear what is happening on the trail.
